Dean Nielson

August 26, 1931 ~ May 14, 2015 (age 83) 83 Years Old


 
Dean Guy Nielson, 83 of Pocatello, ID passed away on May 14th, 2015.  He was born on Aug 26th, 1931 in Logan, UT to Guy M. & Elva Nielson.  They moved to Rock Springs, WY when he was 6 month’s old and later to Pocatello, ID.  His father started the Guy M. Nielson Co.  They built many buildings on ISU’s campus and in the Pocatello and surrounding areas.
Dean attended Emerson Elementary, Irving Jr. High and graduated from Pocatello High School in 1949.  He stayed close to his classmates thru the years.
He was a hard worker.  He had two paper routes when he was young.  He worked for Tommy Barrett and Ashton Henderson Photo Studios.  He started playing the alto saxophone when he was at Irving Jr. High School.  He was the leader of Pocatello High School’s Pep Band.  After high school he went to ISU and majored in Architecture and minored in Business.
Dean met Koye Edwards at ISU and they were married on Ground Hogs day, Feb. 2nd, 1951.  He never forgot their anniversary.  He graduated from ISU in May 1953.  He went to work full time at Guy M Nielson Co. where his architecture came in handy.   He drew plans that could be built.
He had many interests.  He loved to fly his own plane and was very involved with ham radio.  His call letters N7DN are on one of the repeaters.  He checked into the net every Sunday night.  Dean also loved to travel and has been on all seven continents, even Antarctica.  He has been to all 50 states and most of Canada.
Dean was a good husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor.  He was active in his church and held many positions.  He was always available to take his children and their friends to their activities like skiing and the movies or wherever they needed to go.
He is survived by Koye, his wife of 64 years, daughters DeAnn (Jay) Findlay in Bow, WA and Karryl (Paul) Horstmeier in Alpine, UT and his son Douglas (Margaret) Nielson in Pocatello, ID, his brother Claire (Carol) Nielson in Santé Fe, NM, his sister Beverly Anderson in Pocatello, ID.  He has ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Richard and Michael.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bonneville L.D.S. Ward Chapel, corner of 7th and Lewis in Pocatello with Bishop Rob Olcott conducting. Arrangements are under the direction of  the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, 232-0542.  Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Pocatello.  In lieu of flowers, take your family out to dinner.
