Roger Jesse Payne (78), passed away on January 2, 2022, peacefully with his family surrounding him. He was born on February 16, 1943, in Pocatello, ID to Roscoe and Marjorie Payne. He graduated from Pocatello High School in 1962.
Roger married his sweetheart, Linda Stumbo, in May of 1972 after she asked him for a ride in his new Corvette. He loved his 1969 Chevy Corvette Stingray, which he bought brand new and together they enjoyed many happy memories driving around showing off the car. They had three sons Ryan, Jared, and Brett who brought joy and happiness into their lives.
In his early carrier, Roger worked 6 years for North American Aviation in California in the nose cone of the Apollo 11, Apollo 12, and Apollo 13. He moved back to Pocatello and later hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1969. He worked for the Railroad for 32 years as a brakeman conductor and retired in 2001.
Roger and Linda started square dancing with the Choo-Choo’s in 1983. They developed many deep friendships with the other dancers enjoying camping, cards, reunions, and dinners together. He enjoyed the last 20 years of his retirement camping, four-wheeling, and watching his many grandchildren participate in a variety of activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Marjorie Payne, and his son Brett Payne.
Roger is survived by his wife, Linda Payne, his son’s Ryan (Alisa), Jared (Eliza), and his seven grandchildren Breckin, Easton, Kolton, Alivia, Mason, Avrey, and Kyle.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Butte Building, 2300 Butte, Pocatello, Idaho 83201. A live-stream of the service will be available on the Cornelison Funeral Home Facebook page. Viewings will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, January 7, 2022, at Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave. Pocatello, Idaho and one hour prior to the Saturday service in the church on Butte.
