Joan Houston Obituary

Shirley Joan Houston, 90, passed away peacefully with family at her side on February 7, 2024. Joan and her identical twin sister, Charlotte Jean were born on May 31, 1933 in Cayuga IN to James and Carrie Walters.

Joan grew up with her 8 siblings on the family farm in Cayuga. During her youth, Joan was an active member of Cayuga Christian Church. It was at church where she met the young preacher, J. Russell Houston, and they were married on July 29, 1952 in Wabash IN.

Russ and Joan served at several churches in IN and OH. Wanting to move west, the family moved to Pocatello ID to serve at Central Christian Church in 1964. While raising her 5 children and working full-time, Joan's deep love of God motivated her to devote her life to helping the church. She played the piano and organ, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was deeply involved with other church activities. She was Russ' true helpmate. The Houston family traveled and camped together every year. Camping in Hamilton MT was one of their favorite destinations. Every 4 years, Russ and Joan loaded up their 5 children and traveled to Indiana and Pennsylvania to visit family.

In Pocatello, Joan held positions at First Security Bank, Internal Revenue Service, and retired from the Bureau of Land Management in 1995.

Joan is survived by her 5 children: Jeff Houston (Evelyn), McCammon ID; Shawn Hunter, Pocatello; Kurt Houston (Tracey), Emmett ID; Kim Hanmer (Greg), Eagle ID; and Traci Houston (Ross), Nampa ID; 7 grandchildren: Steven Newman, Georgia Christensen, Anthony Hunter, Cole Houston, Brent Houston, Samuel Hanmer, and Caitlin Hanmer; 4 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; and her siblings Charlotte Jean Switzer, Covington IN and James "Bud" Walters, Anderson IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Russell Houston and 6 siblings.

The family would like to thank Rev. Russ Blair and the congregation of Inkom Bible Church for their support, love, and prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 15th from 6-8 pm at Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N 15th Ave., Pocatello. Graveside services will be held Friday, February 16th at 1 pm at Mountain View Cemetery (43E), Pocatello, Idaho.
