James Smith Obituary

James Roy Smith, 74, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, after suffering from a pulmonary embolism.
He was born on January 9, 1944, to Olive and Clarence Smith in Pocatello. He graduated from Pocatello High School and Northern Montana College with a BA in Education. He met his future wife Marsha Calkins at ISU in 1965. They were married in 1967. Their marriage was sealed in the Idaho Falls temple in 1976. He worked as circulation manager of the newspaper in Havre, MT while completing his education. They returned to Pocatello with their young family in 1972 to become circulation manager at the Idaho State Journal owned by Nicholas Iftt, Sr. He worked there for 31 years. They moved to Fairbanks, AK in 1998 where he managed 2 UPS stores with the highest shipping volume in the USA. In 2008 Jim retired, and they returned to Pocatello.
Jim was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served a 2-year mission in England. Some of his favorite callings were serving on the High Council, Bishopric Counselor, ward and stake YM President, teaching gospel doctrine, and serving as Bishop for 6 years in Alaska.
He is survived by his wife Marsha, son Brian and his daughter Allison of Pocatello; David (Annette) and children Mikaela and Timmerie of Texas; Mark (Erin) and children Maren, Kramer, Karmen, Erik, Ema, and Rian of Texas; Andrea (Dan) Hill; and children Sarah, Dylan, and Cameron of Pocatello. He is also survived by his sisters Gene and Diana and 2 great granddaughters, Mariska and Joslin. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers Clem, Ray and Howard.
The viewing will be Friday, November 2 at Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave. from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 3 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2000 S. Fairway Dr. The family will greet visitors beginning at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Idaho Food Bank or charity of your choice.
