James Harten Obituary

James 'Jim' Lynn Harten, 66, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully in Pocatello, ID on March 15, 2024 and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jim was born in Pocatello, the 5th of 6 children. Growing up, he loved football, diving at Lava Hot Springs, and competing in state wrestling. All in his family were talented musicians, Jim played trumpet, but enjoyed dancing more. He and his sister, Dorothy, would famously reenact their parent's first dance at anniversary celebrations full of music. A graduate of Pocatello High School, class of 1976, Jim went on to Idaho State University where he joined Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity and became a president one year. He got his degree in Business and took over the company started by his father, Kenneth Harten, Harten Exteriors.

As an avid outdoorsman, owning his own business gave Jim time for the things he truly enjoyed. Jim had two children, Monique and Turan, and raised them on constant adventures. During winter they skied at Pebble Creek. Summers were spent camping, golfing, hiking, fishing, hunting, playing softball, and most memorably, whitewater rafting on the Snake, Salmon, and Grand Canyon section of the Colorado Rivers. Jim organized and did the rowing for all these trips himself, plus his Dutch oven cooking was another a highlight of outdoor activities. His extended family all loved to spend time together in Lava Hot Springs: diving, swimming, soaking in the hot springs and floating the river. Many happy memories were made there year round.

Jim had a '69 Camero that brought him great joy. The vehicle was totaled twice and it was his life's hobby repairing and getting it running. As he was fighting his cancer, it was his dream to get it back on the road, so his son and nephew, Carl, are going to make it their quest to see it returned to glory, in Jim's honor.

Jim had his many adventures with incredible friends who were like family to him, especially Roger Sears. Together they traveled the world, and enjoyed life fully. He was cared for at the end of his life by his amazingly loving girlfriend Tina Isham. We are grateful for the many vibrant and joyful memories and times that we spent with Jim, he will be greatly missed and we all wish we could have had more adventures together before he left us so quickly.

Jim is survived by his loving daughter Monique (Todd) Roush and son Turan (Chelsy) Harten, grandchildren Jade, Samara, Siene, Auburn, Sage and Titus Roush and Sterling Harten, sisters Ellen Harten, Ruth Harten, and Dorothy (Kevin) Hull, brother Don Harten and many nieces and nephews that he loved deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Lucille Harten, his sister Jean Hardman.

A service and luncheon will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 21, 2024 at the Central Christian Church in Pocatello, ID. A celebration and picnic will be at noon Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the Majestic Park Pavilion in Lava Hot Springs, ID.
