Durward Fry Obituary

Durward Lewis Fry, aged 91, passed away in peace, May 16, 2021 at his home in Pocatello, Idaho surrounded by family.
Durward Fry was born December 12, 1929 in Idaho Falls to Ralph Lewis and Manda Howe Fry. He was married for 62 years to Dorothy Rae Reid Fry who preceded him in death. She was the love of his life.
Durward (also known as “D.L.” and “Dude”) was a good, honorable, and loving man. He put family first, succeeded in several careers, fulfilled his civic duty, and loved life. Durward was proud that he and Dorothy never missed a presidential vote in over 60 years.
Durward graduated from Pocatello High School and then Idaho State College in 1952.
After graduating from college and Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He was an instructor pilot flying the F-86 fighter and T-33 jet trainer in Arizona. Durward excelled at flying and instructing. He achieved the rank of Captain.
D.L. went into business with his father Ralph Lewis Fry, where he managed the Blair-Fry Motor Company, a Dodge car dealership in Pocatello.
Later, he joined Idaho Bank and Trust (now Key Bank) where he became the Vice President of Consumer Loans. A favorite part of his job was visiting the bank’s branches and customers throughout Idaho. During his travels he relished in Idaho’s beauty and history.
Dudes favorite places were Yellowstone National Park and the family cabin near Palisade’s reservoir. He also loved fly fishing the South Fork of the Snake and the Greys Rivers. “Park at Blind Bull and fish upstream” was sage advice he gave to those fishing on the Greys River.
D.L. developed a passion for history including: Idaho, the American West, Lewis and Clark and WWI and WWII. Colonel R.L. Fry, his father was an Air Force pilot who served in both world wars.
Durward had integrity and was an example of how to be a good man. He was responsible, honest, generous and kind. Many people, including some very lucky animals, were blessed to be part of his life.
He is deeply missed by his family and friends and will remain in our memories and hearts.
His sisters, Elizabeth Ruth “Betty” Thayer of Rigby and Beverly Ann Fry of Pocatello preceded him in death.
He is survived by his brother Ralph Howe Fry, of Pocatello, and his three children, Ralph Reid Fry of Gates Oregon, John Durward Fry of Park City, Utah and Colleen Rae Fry of Christchurch, New Zealand. His four grandchildren are: Andy Fry, Kit Fry, Timothy Peter Fry Gostomski and Amanda Marie Fry Gostomski.
As desired by Durward a private remembrance will be held with family and he requested no flowers, please.
