Danny Alma Thompson, passed away after a long struggle with cancer on August 19, 2023. Born April 5, 1948 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Alma and Jennie Thompson. Danny was raised in the idilic farming community of Pingree, Idaho. Here, Danny developed a strong work ethic and lifelong love of the outdoors, cultivated while working the fields near his home.
After graduating Snake River High School in May, 1966, Dan soon left for military service, volunteering for the United States Air Force in 1967. After completing his basic training requirements, Danny managed to find time to briefly return to Southern Idaho and marry Linda Jean McKenzie-Blenkle on August 9, 1969. After serving in the Vietnam conflict, and surviving a major health complication, Danny and his young family returned to southern Idaho in 1972.
In 1973, Danny, now a father of two sons, began working for the City of Pocatello in the Civil Engineering department. This occupation would incorporate his love of the outdoors, and another passion, MATH. Danny would devote 19 years to Pocatello and its residents. During this time, Danny's family grew by five more children; three sons, and two daughters.
In 1990, Danny decided to return to Idaho State University to obtain his B.S., graduating in 1993. This decision also brought about a change in employment, taking a position with the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. Danny would find this his most fulfilling role within the Civil Engineering profession. He always marveled at the landscapes his boyhood southern Idaho offered, and now this new position allowed him to really get out and enjoy the open spaces, compared to the of the busyness and business of city.
His smile and laugh are what drew many people to Danny. He loved to visit and engage in good conversation. Many a five-minute trip to the store often became a forty-five-minute endeavor. And, if Danny wasn't talking, he was reading! A lifetime, voracious reader, Danny infected many with his love of books and literature.
Danny is survived by his wife Linda (sweetie-pie) of 54 years and their seven children, eleven grand-children and 'puppy-boy,' Mo.
Interment services will be held September 8, 2023 at 3pm in the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Blackfoot, Idaho.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.cornelisonfh.com
