Clayton Ooley Obituary
Clayton E. Ooley, 93, Pocatello, passed away, November 9, 2019.
Clayton was born at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska on August 10th, 1926. He is the oldest of two children born to Edith and Lynn Ooley. His brother, Roland, is 6 years younger. His mother was a school teacher until she married his father. His father was a dairyman until the depression occurred and then he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. Clayton and his family moved to Idaho when he was about 11 years old.
Clayton graduated from Pocatello High School class of 1944 and was the student that drew the original chief head on the gym floor. He worked while attending school delivering newspapers and magazines, and as a caddy for the golf club. He also bartended for the Elk's Lodge during the summer.
Clayton joined the Navy in August 1944. He served until January 1947. He was a Gunner's mate second class. He served in Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, and India.
Upon discharge from the service in February 1947 he returned to Pocatello and met the love of his life, Dorothy A. Mitts. He proposed to her 11 days later and they married on June 8, 1947. Dottie and Clayton had four children together: Vicky, Barb, Brad and Diana; five grandchildren: Ben, Robby, Erin, Amanda and Andy; and six great-grandchildren: Mason, Mckenna, Maddox, Kaden, Brennan, and Eliot. Dottie and Clayton were married 58 years before her passing in 2004. As a family we enjoyed fishing, spending time in the outdoors together, and vacationing in Jackson Hole.
Clayton was employed as a manager for over 40 years, 35 years at Wyz-Way Market, and the remaining time at Ernst hardware store.
Clayton was an active Methodist and enjoyed attending church. He also loved being outdoors, drawing, and spending time with this family. He was an active gardener and volunteered at the health department for 14 years maintaining flowerbeds on the grounds. He also maintained 22 rose bushes at his home.
He was loved by all, and will be greatly missed.
