Alfred Richard "Dick" Conroy Obituary

Alfred Richard “Dick” Conroy, Jr., 90, passed away Friday night, August 5, 2022, at the family home on Marsh Creek Rd., in McCammon.

Dick was born September 20, 1931, in Orange, New Jersey to Alfred R. Conroy, Sr., and Ruth Marianne Peet. He spent his early childhood and adolescence in New Jersey, Brooklyn, NY, Cleveland, OH, Chicago and Wayne, IL and later Kansas City, MO. He attended Chicago Latin School (Chicago, IL), Roosevelt Military Academy (Aledo, IL), Elgin Academy (Elgin, IL), and in 1949 graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City, MO. In 1954, he graduated from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, CO with a BS in Geology. He completed his MS in Geology in 1960 from the University of Colorado, Boulder. And just for the heck of it, when he retired in 1996, he completed postgraduate study in Geology at Idaho State University where he was delighted to catch up on the newest science and technology relative to the field.

Dick began his career as a Field Geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey completing assignments in Denver, Boston and Tucson from 1957-1961. From 1961-1967 he was Project Manager for mineral, glass and ceramic processes at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute in Golden, CO. Dick joined FMC Corporation in 1968 and remained with FMC until his retirement in 1996. During his years with FMC, he was Senior Process Engineer in Pocatello, ID; Operating Superintendent, Modesto, CA; and Production Coordinator and Venture Manager, New York City, NY. Returning to Pocatello in 1975, Dick held the positions of Mineral Development Manager, Materials Manager, Technology Manager, Interim Plant Manager and Mining Manager.

Dick was the author of two U.S. Patents and five geologic and ceramic technical publications. In 2006, he published “North American Tectonic History, A Study Guide with References,” and in 2007, “Climate Change in Deep Time, The Science Against Human-Caused Warming.”

During his career Dick was a member of the American Geological Institute; American Mining Association; American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; Idaho Mining Association (director and past president); Greater Pocatello Chamber of Commerce (director and past president; economic affairs vice president, Economic Growth Council chairman); Pocatello Rotary Club; Pocatello Chiefs; Bannock Development Corporation (director). He was also involved in 4-H and High School Rodeo.

Dick served in the U.S. Army from 1954-56, stationed primarily in West Germany.

In 2005 Dick and Lonna Jean opened a small publishing house where they offered publishing advice and services for technical, fictional, family histories and/or memoirs. This was a great shared endeavor utilizing the computer, writing and editorial expertise of both Dick and Lonna Jean.

Dick had a great love for sports, especially the Denver Broncos. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and never stopped being a student of natural science and the world in general. He especially loved the west and all things related to rural life, agriculture, cattle, horses and, over the last 12 years, Border Collies. The most memorable times were spent hauling his daughters to fairs and rodeos, deep sea or fly fishing with family and friends and being out in the mountains. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Susan’s athletic and rodeo career. He loved the family home and small holding on Marsh Creek, and it is a testament to his vision of family tradition and a solid base where his posterity could learn the value and responsibility of animals, the land and a good work ethic. He cherished the many friends and family who made life so enjoyable and complete. He loved art, music, reading and traveling.

Dick married Judith Stephens in 1957. They were later divorced. To this union two daughters were born, Catherine (Katie) and Sarah. Dick met the love of his life, Lonna Jean Aller, in Pocatello in 1968. They were married July 19, 1969, and recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Two daughters were born to this union, Jennifer and Susan.

Dick is survived by his wife, Lonna Jean of McCammon and daughters Katie Roby, Longmont, CO; Sarah Hinkle, Keenesburg, CO; and Susan Wright (Randy), Leawood, KS. Brothers Tom Conroy (Linda), Rockville, MD; Jim Conroy (Irene), Ardmore, PA; Peet Crissey (Debbie), Prairie Village, KS; and Mike Crissey (Judy), Kansas City, MO. Granddaughters Amanda Conroy and Paige Roby, Denver, CO; Anna, Mary Grace and Eva Hinkle, Keenesburg, CO; and grandson Max Wright, Leawood, KS. Two nieces, Kelly (Kevin) Gonzalves, Concord, CA and Nora Conroy, Ardmore, PA. Nephews Scott Neal (Donna), Dallas, TX; Eric Conroy, Gaithersburg, MD; Greg Conroy (Aimee), Darnestown, MD; Brandon Conroy (Emilee), Jessup, MD; Daniel Conroy (Jessi), Derwood, MD; Nick Conroy, Pittsburgh, PA; Brooks Crissey (Alexis), Rohnert Park, CA; Spencer Crissey, Kansas City, MO.

The family wishes to thank Heritage Home Health for the amazing care Dick received over the last few years, specifically Rachelle Losser and Ryan Hendricks. Special thanks to Kadie Richardson, Cassie Green and Patti Koger who comprised the Heritage Hospice team.
