Adolph Meierhoff Obituary
A.L. “Ace” Meierhoff passed away on June 28, 2022 at the age of 92. He was born January 12, 1930 to John and Mary Evelyn Fox Meierhoff in Scranton, Kansas.
His family left Kansas when he was a toddler, relocating to Buhl, Idaho, where his father began working for the Union Pacific Railroad. Dad followed in those footsteps and worked for the UPRR for over 40 years, retiring in 1992.
He met and married Melva June Wing in 1950. He was drafted into the Army shortly after and fought in the early part of the Korean War. He was a Purple Heart recipient and attended many army reunions, traveling to Oklahoma, where many of his army comrades were from. He was among the very last of them.
Upon his return, he and Melva moved from Buhl and settled in Glenn’s Ferry, Idaho. They had six children together and later divorced.
He later married Carol “Diane” Taylor and had three more children together. Dad was active in Boy Scouts and many outdoor activities and took pride in building a 1924 Ford Model T from parts.
The family relocated to Pocatello in 1973 when the railroad terminal was closed in Glenn’s Ferry. There, he enjoyed coaching baseball, and volunteering with Bannock Boys Baseball. The family spent a lot of time at our family cabin, and he loved the Featherville area of Idaho. He was always proud and supportive of all his kids. He and Diane later divorced.
Our Dad always wanted us to excel. He never allowed kids to just sit around - when he was up, everyone was up, and it was always early. Thus, we were always outdoors and could be found together - traveling, fishing, camping, hunting, and experiencing many adventures together - including swimming in pools and rivers. He was happy that he was able to introduce the beauty of the Oregon coast to his kids and grandkids.
Dad was a friend to most people he met, and he maintained many long-term friendships. Dad loved his family - including his parents, siblings, and children. Hosting and attending large family reunions in both Kansas and Idaho were a highlight to him. He was very close to his siblings, and all but one has preceded him.
In his later years he traveled and spent the winters in McAllen, Texas with daughter Nancy (Joe) Silva. He drove cross country many times into his early 80s - usually in a convertible. When he was unable to travel alone, he lived with (and was cared for) by his daughter Susan Smith, in Blackfoot, ID. Susan cared for Dad with love and dedication until his death. The family is thankful for the love and care provided our father by the Solace Hospice team. Their compassion and assistance were a blessing.
He is survived by his children, Nancy (Joe) Silva of McAllen, Texas, John (Kathy) Meierhoff of Pocatello, Idaho, Susan (Tom) Smith of Blackfoot, ID, Von (Lorie) Meierhoff of Carlin, NV, Mark (Julie) Meierhoff of Carlin, NV, Don (Kristi) Meierhoff of Great Falls, MT, Kevin (Mandy) Meierhoff of Pocatello, ID and Chris Meierhoff of Elko, NV. , and his last living sibling Naomi Wing of Mountain Home, ID., as well as a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Everyone is heartbroken, but happy we had him in our lives.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, a daughter, Nora Reading, and his parents and siblings Homer, James, Dorothy, Ray, and Ralph They were the greatest generation.
Per his request - no public services will be held. A private family gathering will take place at a later date.
