Welcome to the memorial page for

Lillian Mildred Cunningham

August 18, 1929 ~ April 15, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old
Lillian M. Cunningham, 87, Pocatello, passed away, April 15, 2017 in her home.
Our Mom was the third daughter born on August 18, 1929 in Duel County South Dakota to Ethan and Ruby Viola Sample; she was the fifth child of six surviving children as follows: Albert, Henry, Phyllis, Ruby, Mom and Virgel. Today, Aunt Ruby, 90 years old, is the last remaining sibling of the six children.
When we could get Mom to talk about it, she had many stories about growing up in a farming family. She loved to talk about her Mom. Her love for her Mom was undying. Even at 87 years old Mom still longed to visit her Mom. Now, her wish has come true. After high school, mom moved to Ipswitch, South Dakota, where she learned the hair styling business and lived and worked out of the train depot.
In 1949 Mom and her oldest sister, Phyllis, moved to Pocatello where the two of them lived together. Aunt Phyllis worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and Mom worked as a telephone switch operator. It was at this time that Mom met and fell in love with our father, Jay Ross Cunningham, who, after returning from the Navy in WWII, worked at the Union Pacific Railroad. He passed away in 1968, and Mom raised their children: David, Debra, Jim, Barb, Kay and Jay.
Today, we want to honor Mom for her selfless nature putting the wants and needs of her children over her own. She was brought up to survive in nature. Like animals and plants in nature, Mom only used what she needed. She was a stabilizing force. Everyone knew they could ALWAYS depend on her. She was ALWA YS there. She was the center of our family's universe and it is our hope to carry on this legacy.
Graveside services will held Wednesday, April 19, at 2 pm in the Mountain View Cemetery (Section 47 East), Pocatello.
We have much more to say about Mom, but we will hold it for the Celebration of Life event on May 27 at Jim and Melody’s home on 12675 Laramie St. in Chubbuck.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.cornelisonfh.com
