Elva Garner Ashley, 84, passed away May 30, 2017, at her granddaughter’s home in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Elva was born November 15, 1932, to Dewey Garner and Thelma Stoker Garner in Roy, Utah. Elva was the youngest of five children. The family later moved to Emmett, Idaho. Elva graduated from Emmett High School in 1950. For a period of time, she worked at the Selective Service Office in Boise, Idaho.
Elva met and married Keith R. Ashley from Emmett on October 10, 1952, and lived in Boise where Keith attended barber school. Their son, Robert, was born in Boise on August 17, 1953. Keith and Elva moved to Pocatello when Rob was six weeks old. Keith worked as a barber at The Bannock Hotel and later moved to different shops in town. Elva worked for a period of time at the Naval Ordinance Plant in Chubbuck. Their daughter, Pamela, was born August 7, 1956. They later welcomed a second son, David, on February 15, 1960.
Elva was always willing to “roll up her sleeves” when needed. She took bets at a horse race track to make ends meet when Keith was injured in an accident and unable to work for a period of time. She even took in other people’s ironing. Elva later worked at the IGA grocery store and at Albertsons food store. She then went on to serve as secretary for the United Food and Commercial Workers’ Union until retirement in 1995. In 1989, Keith suffered a massive stroke which left him disabled. Elva continued to work full time and care for Keith at home. Elva then needed an aortic valve replacement, and the family transitioned Keith into assisted living. Keith passed away in May of 2002, and Elva moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, to move closer to her children, Pam and Dave.
She was quite athletic throughout her life, and had the opportunity to travel the country and meet wonderful, lifelong friends through the Pocatello Women’s Bowling Association. She enjoyed many activities with her family which included grandchildren’s (and later great grandchildren’s) ball games, musical concerts, and drama productions. Elva was an excellent seamstress altering clothing for special occasions, making costumes for drama productions, and quilting. She was always willing to take on any task and give it a try. Grandma’s house was the location for many family gatherings. Barbeques, meals, birthday and graduation parties were all enjoyed there. Elva loved to watch sports events with her family, and particularly, her son David. Whenever the Celtics were playing, they were together to watch. Elva knew a lot about rules and regulations of the game and could call a foul quicker than some of the referees.
Elva was deeply loved by her family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. Her laughter, and smile and her ability to make us laugh and feel loved will truly be missed.
Elva was preceded in death by her husband, Keith, her son, Rob, her brother Dee Garner, sisters Genevieve Porter, LeOra McCrary, Elaine Olsen, and great grandson Teegan Keith Sakaguchi.
Survivors include her daughter Pamela Springborg of Sheridan, Wyoming, Pam’s son Brian McKelley of Idaho Falls, and her daughter Katelyn McKelley of Sarasota, Florida, her son David Ashley of Idaho Falls, his son, Daniel Ashley of Boise, his daughter Aubrey Ashley of Idaho Falls, his son, Ben Keller-Kuhn of Bloomington, Indiana, and grandson Cohen Waid of Idaho Falls.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 5, 2017 at 11 am in the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.cornelisonfh.com
