Beverlie Ann (Brown) Whitaker, 86, died peacefully at her daughters home Saturday, May 27th 2017 following an illness. She was surrounded by her family.
Beverlie was born September 4th, 1930 in Tyhee Idaho to Elbert Ray and Zerelda Mae (Weaver) Brown. She was the youngest of six children. She had four sisters: Helen, Ruth, Jean, Mary, and one brother, Scott, to welcome her home. Mom said, her parents welcomed her warmly, although they were disappointed because they wanted a boy. She weighed in at an even ten pounds. It took her parents a little while to come up with her name, but eventually it was decided as Beverlie. Her father liked everything plumb. The unusual “y” in Beverly was not plumb. Her name was spelt Beverlie. Mom had a happy and wonderful childhood, growing up in Tyhee. She was taught obedience, honesty, respect, and faithfulness to the church.
She attended Tyhee Elementary, Irving Jr. High, and graduated Pocatello High School in 1948. She met her eternal sweetheart, John Hawkley Whitaker, her freshman year of high school. They would go on a date every friday night. They would go to Floyd and Harry’s for a cheeseburger, fries, milkshake, and a movie at the Chief Theatre.
After high school, Mom went to work to Montgomery Ward, saving for college. Prior to Dad serving his mission, they attended the 7th Ward’s Gold and Green Ball. Mom was the Queen, and Dad was Prince Charming. Dad went on his mission, and Mom attended Brigham Young University. Mom said, she decided to attend BYU, as it would be a good place to spend some of the slow passing time as her missionary was out in the field.
On August 31st, 1951 Mom and Dad were married in the Idaho Falls Temple. Mom and Dad were blessed with five wonderful children, Ray, Julie, John Tod, Nancy, and Paul.
Mom typed and did shorthand work for two different Patriarchs. She also served in many different callings in the LDS church. After their children were raised, Mom and Dad served their mission in the Brazilian Campinas Mission. Her hobbies included, sewing, playing cards, playing the piano and spending time with her family.
Mom wants her dear friends and family to remember their friendships while she was on this earthly journey. As Mom described it, it’s been quite a ride. Mom kept a journal, in her journal she said, “Who knows us better than ourselves? May this history have meaning to those who take time to read it.” A great movie quote to sum up Mom’s life is from the movie Forrest Gump, “ Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.”
Survivors include: son: Ray (Kathy) Whitaker of Pocatello, daughter: Julie (Larry) Flynn of Richland, WA, daughter: Nancy (Rocky) Hancock of Chubbuck, son: Paul Whitaker of Chubbuck, six grandchildren: Joshua, Kimberly, Ray Lynn, Timothy, John, Eldon, and fifteen great-grandchildren. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son: John Tod, four sisters, and brother.
The family would like to thank Helping Hands Home Health and Solace Hospice for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
In lieu of a funeral at Mom’s request, the viewing will be held at Cornelison Funeral Home ,431 N 15th Ave., Pocatello, Wednesday, May 31st 2017 at 11:00 A.M. Burial services will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
