Marie Spevak Christofferson, 84, passed away, Friday evening, August 3, 2012 at her home after a brief illness with her loving family by her side.
She was born March 15, 1928, Wheatland, Wyoming to Louis and Josephine Krivanec Spevak.
She graduated from Rupert High School in 1945 and later received teachers training at Albion Normal School, a B.A. degree from Idaho State University in Speech and Drama, a Master's degree in Education and Principal Certificate from ISU, and an Education Specialist Degree in 1986, also from ISU.
She married John E. Christofferson on June 24, 1951 in Rupert, Idaho.
She taught elementary school from 1948-1974. In 1975, she was named Title I Coordinator for Pocatello School District #25 where she supervised elementary and secondary teachers for reading and math classes. As Coordinator, she also wrote Title I grants. In 2005, she received the "Woman of Achievement" award representing AK PEO.
She loved traveling, attending the symphony, and events supporting Idaho State University. She was extremely active in Alpha Delta Kappa, Alpha Chi Omega, PEO Sisterhood, and NKA classes. Marie was also an avid reader and walker. Her past community activities included serving as President of the Idaho Council International Reading Association, member of the Portneuf District Library Foundation, member of the Executive Committee for New Knowledge Adventures, and an active member of Seekers. Marie's passion for education was something she loved to share. She was particularly proud of the influence, support, and guidance she was able to provide towards the education of her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, John W. and Connie Christofferson of Boise, ID, a daughter, Jo Ann and Steve Peterson of Twin Falls, ID, grandchildren John Michael Christofferson, Jill and James Litchfield, John Peterson, Anne Peterson, Josh and Chrissy Christofferson, John Edward and Kim Christofferson, sisters Betty Douglas, Josephine Springmeyer, and Rosa Maye Goff . She was preceded in death by her husband John Edward I Christofferson, a daughter Jill Marie, a son James Edward, her parents Louis and Josephine Spevak, brothers Edward, Louis, and Frank.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. in the Cornelison Funeral Chapel, 431 north 15th Ave. Pocatello where the family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until service time. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Pocatello. Memorials may be given to the John E. Christofferson Scholarship Memorial Fund in care of the Eastern Idaho Technical College ( E.I. T.C.), 1600 South, 2500 East, Idaho Falls, Idaho 83404. Services are under the direction of the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, 232-0542.
