Scarlett Aalaonaonakauikekaiohaena Pate

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on 23 February 1967, Scarlett Pate passed away peacefully in her home on 29 September 2015. Scarlett later lived in Arkansas, Florida, North Carolina, and the last 24 years in Utah.  Scarlett graduated from Douglas Byrd High School in North Carolina with honors and distinction of Who’s Who among American High School Students. 

Scarlett cherished being in the service of others and appreciated school.  A bright warm engaging spirit allowed Scarlett to instantly bond with others.  Her intellect, intuitiveness and charisma quickly assured the confidence of those around her and most often led to influence and natural leadership. 

Scarlett first worked in Fayetteville, Carolina during high school and had medical career intentions.  Scarlett was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in many positions.  She attended BYU for a year and then departed as a medical missionary and served 19 months in the Philippines Bacolod Mission.  She had a distinct love for her service, her associates and the humility of the Philippine people.  

Post mission Scarlett returned to Provo, Utah and began working for Deseret Industries. During the 5 years she was there her dedication and work ethic allowed her to take on greater responsibilities eventually leading to an entry level position at KSL broadcasting.  KSL allowed Scarlett to rise again in her role and work as a Vice President of Human Resources for Bonneville International Corporation.  Scarlett traveled throughout the United States, often traveling weekly to serve at the dozens of Bonneville stations.  Whether at Deseret Industries or negotiating with the communications labor union for Bonneville International Corporation in Washington D.C., Scarlett felt blessed to have the work that she did and the abilities to faithfully serve others. 

Health complications began hindering Scarlett’s capacities in 2005.  In October 2014, after several challenges with health recurrences Scarlett briefly lost her ability to walk.  Chemotherapy helped her walk again at a more limited capacity.  Bi-weekly treatments continued throughout most of 2015 in Goodyear Arizona at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).  Special thanks extends to Delta Airlines for being exceptionally accommodating with 50 plus flight costs, caring customer service and disability assistance. 

Scarlett continued to work tirelessly until June 2015 and had the happiness of attending a Kauai family reunion in July 2015.  Scarlett’s family had the blessing of caring for her entirely in her home.  Special thanks also is extended to builder Len Pickens who constructed an entirely worry free comfortable home suited for the physical challenges we all anticipated with her health.  

Scarlett is survived by her husband Doug Derricott, her parents Fred and Ivy Pate, brothers Bryan Kea and Nalei (Ku) Pate Kahakalau and nieces Chelsi Pate, Lini and Polani Kahakalau.  Her loving grandparents Edward and Ivy Enos preceded Scarlett in death. 

Special gratitude extends to the care received from Dr. Howard Colman, Sean Strobe and Kylee Arbogast of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.  Additional appreciation extends for the focused care giving, dedication and compassion of all those teamed with Dr Ashish Sangal of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (Goodyear, AZ).

Finally we offer eternal thanks to Deseret Management Corporation, Bonneville International Corporation, DMBA, DDM, and all those within her beloved KSL family.  Any donation to the American Brain Tumor Association is appreciated. 

KSL will host a memorial for family and friends of Scarlett 2 October 2015 at 1:30 PM, KSL Broadcast House 55 North 300 West, Salt Lake City, Utah 84101.  Interment will occur at the Laie, Hawaii Cemetery at 2:00 PM on 8 Oct 2015.
