Larry Lystrup, 65, died peacefully on January 23,2017, at his sister's home in Pocatello, Idaho. He courageously fought a 5-year battle with cancer. He would not give up; he loved his life.
Lawrence C. Lystrup was born May 9, 1951 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Helen and Lawrence Lystrup. As the only boy in the family for many years, he was spoiled and indulged with love. He loved growing up in Pocatello and no matter where he moved, always considered it home. He loved all sports and stayed competitive until his illness. He wrote a book about his sports experiences. He was a good friend and has many of the same friends he has had since elementary school. He graduated Pocatello High School in 1969, and later ISU with a degree in Political Science. He had a lifelong passion and interest in politics. Larry was bright, philosophical, funny and had a story for every occasion. In our family if the story has already been told, but fits a new situation, it's okay to tell it again. And he did.
He married Janice Hardman and they were blessed with one son, Nathan. Though they later divorced, Janice and Larry remained good friends to the end. Larry spent a few years working for Union Pacific. While there, he met Dianna Woolsey and he was instantly smitten. They were blessed with two children, Noah and Lauren. They were later divorced. He adored his children and his three grandchildren: Kamran, Samee and Jurney. He also had a strong bond with his siblings. This bond was strengthened through his years of struggle. Larry has many nieces and nephews and loved them all. He made a real effort to be at every family event. Both his parents had many siblings, which gave him aunts and uncles and cousins. The Lystrup and Mathews family bond is strong.
Larry was baptized in the LDS faith, but was not involved in any religion. He had a deep spirituality and assured his family many times that there is a God and that Jesus loves us.
Larry spent many years working in Real Estate, both in Salt Lake City and Sacramento. For the past two years, he has lived with his daughter, Lauren, in Southern California and then his son, Noah, in Northern California. He had a strong desire to return home. The kids, along with two cousins, worked hard to make that happen.
Larry had the ability to find joy in his moments. Even when he was in terrible pain, if he could sit in the sun, it would be a great day. He taught his family and friends how to face illness with grace, dignity, and humor. "I don't know how I can be so sick, and still look so damn good."
Larry was preceded in death by his beloved parents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and his brother-inlaw, Mike Bunce. He is survived by his children, Nathan Lystrup, Salt Lake City, Utah, Noah (Kevin Mann) Lystrup, Oakland, California, Lauren (Jazz Lamadora) Lystrup, Daly City, Ca., his grandchildren, his siblings, Janice (Mike) Triplett, Pocatello, Paula Bunce, Pocatello, Darcy Burns, Pocatello, Camie (Warren) Walker, Cypress, Ca., Charlie(Nancy) Lystrup, Yoncalla, Oregon, his uncle Bill (Ilene) Lystrup, aunt Irene (Dick) Harrison, aunt Lorraine (Lovell) Harrop, nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
Larry took to heart the words of Dylan Thomas, "Do not go gentle into that good night...rage, rage against the dying of the light." And he did.
