I met Emer more than a dozen years ago when our paths crossed quite by accident. We lost contact after he left Illinois, but in light of the opportunity I had to make a visit to Springfield next month I thought I would reach out to see if he had any pointers on other things I should see or look for. When there was no answer at either of his phone numbers, my heart sank, and a quick Google search confirmed my worst fears.

Emer touched my life in a very meaningful way, and he will be missed, but never forgotten.

Hello: We have just learned today of Emer's passing. We are saddened to have learned of his death. In the brief time I knew Emer I respected his immense empathy for others and interest in lifelong learning. Of a return to school he asked by "for a chance, all I want is a chance." I feel honored to have been part of this "chance." He touched all of us in his few months in the program. He will be missed. Dr. Kleist and the faculty at ISU.

A terrible loss, way too early. The Emer I've known for 51 years is still in my memories. He will be sorely missed.

I first met Emer a few weeks after we both turned 12 years old and we remained good friends throughout high school as were our sisters. Although we only rarely saw each other over the past several decades, I was fortunate to have a chance to reconnect a few years ago at our 40th high school reunion. I was struck then that, notwithstanding the passage of decades, the essential Emer I remembered and greatly admired from years earlier was still very much there: ebullient and caring, yet also ready to ridicule life’s twists with wit and gusto. While deeply saddened by his death at way too young an age, I cannot help but also smile in his memory.

I will miss him.

This is a terrible loss for us; heaven's gain. 51 years ago we became friends. In touch through the years, but always a touch in my heart. A wonderful spirit that will be missed by many. Heartfelt condolences to all touched by Emer.

We are heartbroken over your loss. Please know our thoughts are with you in this difficult time. Emer was a positive bright light in my life since we met as subbies at Uni in 1966, over 50 years ago. He will never be forgotten by me or anyone in our class.
