Bill Harris, 80, Pocatello, passed away, September 4, 2017 at the Idaho State Veterans Home, Pocatello.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Carol (Patterson) Harris; his son Mike Harris of Pocatello, ID; his daughter Sheli Stumpp of Elko, NV; his son Scott Harris of Nampa, ID; two grandchildren, Josh Stumpp and Megan Stumpp; and five great-grandchildren, Tanner McManus, Harper Stumpp, Payton McGuire, Preston Stumpp, and Aree Stumpp.
Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Bill joined the United States Navy in 1954, where he was a Boiler Operator II on the USS Trathen, a World War II-era Fletcher-class destroyer. While serving in the Navy, Bill received a Good Conduct Medal (First Award) and a China Service Medal. After serving four years, Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1958.
In his early years after serving in the Navy, Bill was an accomplished hairdresser having owned 4 beauty salons in southern California. In 1977, Bill moved his family to Soda Springs, ID where he became the owner/operator of the Trail Motel. Additionally, Bill started 4 beauty salons in Idaho – 2 in Soda Springs and 2 in Pocatello.
Bill was actively involved in civic organizations in Soda Springs, including the Soda Springs Lions Club, Soda Springs Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club of Soda Springs. Bill was also a reserve on the Soda Springs Police Department.
An avid golfer, Bill was a long time member of the Oregon Trail Country Club (OTCC) in Soda Springs. He served on the board of directors for the OTCC and became the Director of Golf.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Hope Lutheran Church in Soda Springs. Military rites will be offered by the Veterans Honor Guard following the service.
